Happy Belated New Year! Instead of blogging last week, I enjoyed time at the cabin, where Kristy and I made candles for the first time, and I gave my mind permission to rest and consider some plans for the 2018.

If I’d known candles were so easy to make I would have tried them years ago!

I have never been a resolution maker (although Annette Benning’s annual resolutions to whine less and drink more water did inspire me to give both a shot, because we can always whine less and drink more water). Last year, I also accepted that I stink at Read the Bible in a Year. No matter which plan I use, I always drop out in 2 Kings and spend the rest of the year feeling like a bad Christian even though I still read my Bible, just not according to the plan I signed up for. What I do continue to get a lot out of is…

My word for the year

My verse for the year

Choosing a yearly devotional

Working some kind of creativity into my time with God, even if I can only do it occasionally.

After a lot of thought and prayer, I chose Trust as my word for 2018, and Psalm 9:10 as my verse.

I’ve come a long way in the trust department, but I know I still have some work to do when it comes to…

Really trusting God

Trusting trustworthy people

Trusting myself

My much-loved copy of Oswald Chamber’s classic.

My Utmost for His Highest is my devotional for the year. The day after I chose it, author Joanna Weaver announced a Bible reading plan that involved reading one chapter per day (more for Psalms) AND My Utmost for His Highest, so I signed up. I noticed that, though we aren’t reading the whole Bible, we will eventually get to 2 Kings. I am determined to get through it this time!

Kristy provided the creativity element when she gave me this journal for Christmas. Each day includes a doodling page!

So far, I am thoroughly enjoying how God is using all of these things to teach me about trust and so much more as I go into an exciting new year.

What do you do to mark the new year? Do you set goals, choose a verse to focus on, start a new Bible study? What has God taught you through this routine?

  1. Love this, Jeanette. I’ve chosen the word “anointing” this year because it’s popped up so many places that I want to do a study of how God uses it. Happy New Year!
